TESL PORTFOLIO
Welcome to my TESL Portfolio! As part of the TESL Certificate program, I had the privilege of spending a semester teaching conversational English to second-language learners with a co-instructor. The workshops were divided into two halves: during the first half of the semester, I worked with one group of students, and during the second half, I had the opportunity to teach a new group. This experience allowed me to adjust my teaching approach and engage with a range of language learning styles. TESL Internship
The University of Florida TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) Internship provides aspiring educators with practical experience teaching English to multilingual learners. Through lesson planning, classroom instruction, and student engagement, interns apply language acquisition theories in real-world settings while helping learners build confidence and proficiency in English.
While the internship strengthened my ability to teach English, it also became one of the most meaningful cultural learning experiences of my college career. Each class brought together individuals from different countries, languages, and backgrounds, creating an environment where learning flowed in both directions. As I taught conversational English, my students shared phrases from their native languages, traditions from their home countries, and stories about their everyday lives. Despite our cultural differences, I was surprised by how many experiences and values we shared. Whether discussing family traditions, holidays, food, or personal goals, I found that genuine connection often transcended language barriers.
The relationships I built with my students extended beyond the classroom and allowed me to experience cultures in ways I never could have through a textbook. I had the opportunity to attend one of my student's Iftar during Ramadan, where I learned about the significance of the celebration while sharing a meal with their family and community. Throughout the semester, students also brought traditional dishes from their home countries to class, giving me the chance to experience new cuisines while learning the stories and customs behind them. These moments transformed our classroom into a space of cultural exchange, curiosity, and mutual respect.
This internship reminded me that effective communication is not only about teaching vocabulary or grammar, it is about listening, understanding different perspectives, and building relationships across cultures. While I entered the program expecting to teach English, I left with a deeper appreciation for the richness of cultural diversity and the importance of approaching every interaction with openness and humility. In many ways, this experience taught me just as much as it taught my students, reinforcing my passion for cross-cultural communication and my desire to pursue a career where I can continue connecting people from diverse backgrounds.
